St John’s is proud to have a staff that combines experience and tradition with youthful energy and new ideas. Our Senior Pastor has been on our staff over 30 years and our Minister of Music over 25 years. Our Associate Pastor and Minister of Music for Children and Youth have both proudly been part of the UCC their whole lives!
Meet the St. John’s Staff:
Rev. Dr. Susan C. Bertolette, Senior Pastor (“Pastor Sue”)
Pastor Sue Bertolette came to St. John’s in June of 1980, beginning as Associate Pastor just one day after her ordination into the Christian ministry. Upon earning her Doctor of Ministry degree in 1993, she, along with her colleague John Touchberry, began working together as co-pastors, and upon Dr. Touchberry’s retirement in 1999, Sue was elected as St. John’s Sr. Pastor. Sue views pastoral care and worship leadership as top priorities, seeking to offer sermons that speak to real life issues and provide concrete, tangible ways to address the challenges of daily life. She enjoys the creative challenge of writing a monthly column for the local newspaper, as well as opportunities to teach and lead study groups for all ages. Pastor Sue enjoys spending time with her family (husband Bob and grown children Jenny, John and John’s wife Kelly), reading, bicycling and ringing handbells. When Sue speaks of her ministry at St. John’s, among a people she lovingly refers to as a “wonderfully motley crew,” she has repeatedly affirmed “there is nowhere else I would rather be.”
Below: Rev. Sue is honored for her 35th anniversary as a pastor at St. John’s UCC – June 14, 2015.

Rev. Adelaide Stong , Associate Pastor (“Pastor Addie”)
Pastor Adelaide (Addie) Stong serves as the Associate Pastor at St. John’s. After attending Eastern University and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Youth Ministry, she went right on to attend Lancaster Theological Seminary where she graduated with a Masters of Divinity and a certificate in Youth and Young Adult Ministry. St. John’s is her first call right out of seminary and she has felt God’s calling ever since she randomly (or maybe not so randomly) heard of “this great church in Lansdale” in the fall of her last year of seminary. She remarks that, “St. John’s is truly a special place. From the moment you walk in the door, you just feel a good and holy energy fill you up.” She is truly thrilled to be serving and learning along side the other staff members and wonderful people of the St. John’s community.
A native of Hershey, Pennsylvania, Addie loves spending time with her family, drinking good coffee, baking, spending time outside, laughing, and visiting with friends. Addie’s interests in ministry include youth and young adult ministry, children’s ministry, and outdoor ministry, but her passion in life is creatively connecting with any and all people, no matter the age or setting, through her writing, prayers, sermons, and “sharing life with people”.

Rev. Patti Thomas is assisting Pastor Addie in the summer months of 2017 while Rev. Sue is on sabbatical. Patti was an active member of St. John’s for many years, instrumental in helping start our Wednesday Enrichment program combining our children’s choir rehearsals with times for crafts, activities and dinner. She held the staff title of “St. John’s Minister of Creative Arts” & headed our 125th anniversary celebration in 2000-2001. Shortly after that Patti answered the call to ministry, graduated from Lancaster Theological Seminary, and was called to St. Paul’s UCC in nearby Sellersville, Pa., where she was pastor from 2007 until her retirement in 2016. We are happy to welcome her back to assist leading worship at St. John’s during Rev. Sue’s sabbatical this summer of 2017.
David L. Furniss, Minister of Music
Since 1987, David Furniss has been Minister of Music at St. John’s Church, overseeing a varied Music Ministry that includes music in worship as well as the events of St. John’s Artist Series. Drawing on the richness of musical talent available among St. John’s members, he brings diverse musical experiences to worship each Sunday morning. With a focus on traditional music, it is not uncommon to experience other styles as well, such as spirituals, Gospel, jazz, Dixieland, contemporary, and world music. David’s interests beyond St. John’s community include travel, particularly in Mexico, as well as singing for Evensong services locally and in English Cathedrals. With music degrees from The Ohio State University and Southern Methodist University, David brings a passion for music to St. John’s that welcomes and encourages participation by its members and the wider community.

Allison Bruen, Minister of Music for Children and Youth
Allison Bruen joined the St. John’s staff as Minister of Music for Children and Youth in 2014, but she was no stranger to our congregation. Allison grew up in our congregation, singing in various choirs, and her mother, Grace Bruen, served the same staff position for many years! Allison is also the Operations and Production Manager for the Sellersville Theatre.

Lisa Delp, Church Office Administrator
On October 19, 2016, Lisa Delp started as St. John’s new Office Administrator. Lisa comes to us with a wealth of office experience and a deep understanding of “Church.” She is a lifelong member of Christ Covenant Church in Kulpsville and is looking forward to getting to know St. John’s and our wonderfully motley crew! Please make a point of stopping by during the week to welcome her, or give her a call and let her know how glad we are to have her among us.
