Youth and activities focused on youth are an important part of the life & weekly activities at St John’s. If you are middle school or high school age, please join us!

Message from Pastor Addie – Fall, 2018 Youth Events!

There are a few activities and opportunities for our young people on the horizon that i wanted to share with you! We would LOVE to have your child involved in any or all of these activities.

The Congregational Dinner is Sunday, October 14th following the 10:15 worship service.  The whole family is invited, but we do count on our young people to help serve the meal, so we would very much appreciate your assistance! This dinner is a wonderful opportunity for the whole congregation to come together and see our young people being the wonderful helpers that they are! 🙂 And of course, the food is always good! If you are able to help serve, please have your child leave the 10:15 service during the last hymn and head downstairs to the serving window in the assembly hall outside the kitchen.  Mary Billy and one of our Deacons will be there to “direct traffic”.

I wanted to let you know about an opportunity for the youth of St. John’s (ages 13-18). The Pennsylvania Southeast Conference, of which our church is a part, is hosting a Fall Youth Event from Nov. 2-4. Two of our youth attended the Spring Youth Event last season and both had a very positive experience! This is a weekend retreat where youth from other UCC churches in our area will gather together for a weekend of workshops, worship, discussion groups, outdoor-recreation time, campfires (with s’mores!), movie and discussion, and a dance!

The cost of the retreat is 90$/person which covers all housing and meals for the whole weekend. Should your youth choose to attend, St John’s will reimburse you for half of each registration fee! Please do not let money be the reason you don’t send your child.  Please talk with me if this is a concern!

This event runs from Friday Nov. 2 at 5pm to Sunday Nov. 4 at noon and is held at  South Mountain YMCA Camp (201 Cushion Peak Rd. Wernersville, PA 19565).  Parents will need to be responsible for transportation to and from, but carpooling seems like a good option if there are a few people interested! I’m more than happy to help people arrange that! In addition to other pastors and parent chaperones, I am planning to attend/chaperone this retreat on Friday and Saturday, but will need to head back for church on Sunday, so there will be a familiar face there for most of the time-I just won’t be able to drive anyone.

Please let me know ASAP if you are interested and I will tell you how to get registered! The registration page can be found here  if you want to check it out or go ahead and register and just let me know!

We will be having a Spud Lunch on November 11th as a fundraiser for the next National Youth Event which will be held in July of 2020 at Purdue University.  If your child will be between the ages of 13-18 in July 2020, they are eligible to travel with us and attend the event!  If you are interested in being a part of that group, it is important that you be a part of the fundraising efforts, which are starting now! Please let me know if you are interested in going to National Youth Event so I know who to keep in the loop as more information is made available. 🙂

I also know your lives are so busy and your family is traveling a million directions! My hope is that one of those directions leads you to be a part of the wonderful things we have going on here at St. John’s! As always, be in touch with any questions.  I am eager to make all of these activities work for you and your young person!

All my best, Pastor Addie

St. John’s has an active group of youth involved in all aspects of life at St. John’s, including participating in our choirs, assisting the pastors in worship, helping in the nursery, helping with the younger children in Enrichment and Vacation Bible School, and gathering for special social activities throughout the year.  Youth are always welcome to volunteer to help with upcoming special events such as the Alternative Gift Market and White Gift Sunday!

Our youth gather each Sunday morning from 9 am to 10 am (September to May) for a combined ages Junior and Senior High Sunday school class, filled with lively discussions and activities. The class meets in the informal Fireside Room, complete with sofas, comfortable chairs, big screen TV and a pool table!

Please watch the Herald and Enlightener for upcoming special youth events!  There is also a special bulletin board just across the hall from Pastor Addie’s office just for news and pictures from youth events!  You can also keep up with the latest events on our St. John’s Facebook group just for members and friends – ask Pastor Sue or Addie to join!

For many years, a large group of our youth have participated in service activities during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service weekend in January. In 2015, on Sunday, January 18th, our youth continued the tradition as participants in our ‘Soup & Stitch’ event to make ‘walker bags’ for the residents of Elm Terrace Gardens (home to St. John’s members and other local residents), made soup for the participants, and followed by watching & discussing the film “Freedom Song” about the civil rights movement.  In the past 3 years, our youth traveled to Bethany Children’s Home in Berks County for an afternoon service project followed by a dinner and discussion time back at church.  Watch for news of our next project!
