St. John’s Groups & Meetings

SMALL GROUPS OF ST. JOHN’S MEMBERS WHO MEET REGULARLY – SOCIAL & SERVICE GROUPS

ST. JOHN’S NEEDS GARDENING VOLUNTEERS FOR OUTDOOR WORK – SPRING, SUMMER & FALL EACH YEAR!

DEADHEAD(er)s NEEDED!

In the spring, the Church gardens will need to be planted, weeded and mulched.  Volunteers are appreciated!  Then in the summer:

We need help removing the dead flowers and watering the plants.  Here is how it works – a schedule will be posted here in the summer.

You sign up for a week at a time, and you decide when you want to do it.  Hopefully, we need the gardens to look good for Sundays when more people are around.  Your week will start on Sunday through the next Saturday.

Most areas have soaker hoses on timers, so you only need to remove the spent flowers, in particular the geraniums.  And you will need to check the potted plants, depending on the weather, since they dry out quickly in hot weather.  You do not need to check the Rose Garden or the Labyrinth garden, since we will monitor that.

If you are single and need help, let us know and we will try to get help for you.  Remember that God is in charge, and sometimes he sends rain, with special nutrients built in.  You may luck out on that week!

If you can help, please email Don Atkiss in the spring at datkiss@comcast.net or call Don at 215-872-7487.

There are a number of small groups that meet regularly throughout the year and welcome new members at all times. They include a monthly Saturday morning retreat for women, a men’s breakfast that meets monthly at area restaurants, a Monday evening prayer group, St. John’s Prayer Shawl Ministry, St. John’s Quilters & St. John’s Stampers (see more under Missions tab), St. John’s Health Ministry Team (see more below), St. John’s Gardeners, and “Breaking Bread”, an informal dining and fellowship group which gathers the 2nd Sunday of the month at a local restaurant after the 10:15 am worship service – all are welcome to attend any month you are available – see the Herald for details.

Periodically throughout the year, a Wednesday evening Bible Study group meets, focusing on specific themes, books or books of the Bible.  There is a five week session in the fall, a five week session during the season of Lent, and also three consecutive evenings of adult Bible Study that coincide with our annual Vacation Bible School week in June.  Check our publications for current information.

St. John’s Usher Ministry Teams

Our St. John’s Usher Ministry Teams meet before and during our 10:15 am worship services.  We currently have 5 teams which rotate duties monthly.  The main duty of our ushers is to help greet persons arriving for worship and hand them a copy of the bulletin while directing them into the sanctuary.  During worship, our ushers greet first time visitors during the opening announcements and hand them information about St. John’s, and take a count of how many persons are attending worship that day.  Our ushers also watch for and help anyone who might have a special need or questions.  Toward the end of each service, the ushers collect the offering, going row by row of the pews and passing the offering plates.

Our usher teams can always use additional members – speak with an usher captain or our pastors to get started.

St. John’s Health Ministry Team

Our St. John’s Health Ministry Team meets regularly to provide health and wellness services to our congregation.  It is comprised of members of St. John’s who are trained for and/or work in the health care field. They are also “on standby” should any medical situation or emergency arise during worship services or any events at St. John’s.  Our St. John’s Health Ministry Team offers regular blood pressure screenings after worship on a monthly basis at the church as well as other special services – check the Enlightener & Herald for schedules.

Shelly Longcoy (R.N.) of our team is offering a support group called “Help Yourself to Healthy Living” on the 4th Thursday of each month.  Each month Shelly will discuss a different health/wellness related topic followed by a discussion period.  Contact Shelly at RALongcoy@abingtonhealth.org

Umbrella Ministry – Want to join a group with no meetings? Our St. John’s Umbrella Ministry is for you!  Simply pick a Sunday you are available, sign up on the bulletin board in the hall outside the Library, and come by 9:45 am that Sunday. Responsibilities are to greet the congregation using the ramp entrance, open the door for those coming in, & help when it is raining by helping people in with an umbrella.  New volunteers are always welcome and it’s a fun way to meet and greet your fellow St. John’s members & guests!

Details regarding all of the small groups meeting at St. John’s can be found in our bi-weekly Herald , weekly church bulletin & the monthly Enlightener. See our Publications page to read these publications on our website.
