Missions and Justice

Learn how we serve the Lansdale community and other regions through missions, service projects, and a commitment to justice.

St. John’s is a member of the United Church of Christ denomination, which has about 1 million members. Within the individual churches, and with individual members, there are wide-ranging perspectives on issues that affect us socially and politically, but the UCC and its predecessors have always stood up for Justice in the name of Jesus Christ.

The United Church of Christ’s justice work builds a stronger faith-based movement for peace, justice, equality and inclusivity. Areas of focus include Racial, Environmental, and Economic Justice; Health and Wholeness; and Public Policy and Advocacy. Learn more on the UCC website.

Churches have an important responsibility to care for their communities. St. John’s contributes to and maintains strong connections with numerous local organizations that support individuals in need. These resources are available to anyone in and outside of our congregation. More information is available via church office.

Manna on Main Street is committed to ending hunger in the North Penn region by providing food, fulfilling social service and education needs, and conducting community outreach. Through a food pantry and soup kitchen, emergency financial aid, counseling and referrals, and education opportunities, Manna serves those in need with the hope “that everyone might be fed.”

Manna was started in the basement of St. John’s in 1981! While the organization is now housed a couple blocks away and sustained by the entire community, we continue to support the important work they do for the Lansdale community.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul USA harnesses the power of community and partnerships to feed, clothe, house and heal individuals and families in our community who have nowhere else to turn for help.

We make regular donations to St. Vincent de Paul and connect folks in need of assistance to their resources. Our partnership allows us to address requests for aid more adequately than what is possible on our own. Those with an immediate need should call (215) 721-0199 ext. 224 for support.

Since 1988, the mission at UrbanPromise has been to equip Camden’s children and young adults with the skills necessary for academic achievement, life management, spiritual growth, and Christian leadership. They strive to fulfill this mission through after-school programs, summer camps, two schools, experiential learning, job training, and a host of other programs that challenge youth to develop and realize their potential. UrbanPromise has participated in our November Charitable Gift Market for many years. St. John’s has also collected school supplies and donations for UrbanPromise as part of our June VBS offering, and helps distribute gifts from our Love Gift Service in their neighborhood.

In recent years, St. John’s members have been generous in giving support to the Oaxaca Learning Center, a nonprofit organization in Mexico offering free academic teaching and learning services to students 14 years and older. The Learning Center assists students from low income or impoverished urban families and from indigenous rural villages throughout the state of Oaxaca who have migrated to the capital city to complete their studies. Founded by Gary Titus, formerly of San Francisco, the Learning Center is living witness to a vision becoming reality. Since it officially opened its doors in 2005, the Learning Center has nurtured hundreds of students, helping them through junior and senior high school and providing many of them with the resources to pursue university studies.

OCWM Basic support enables associations, conferences, the national setting, and some of our affiliated partners to continue providing the care and services that are vital to the United Church of Christ. OCWM Basic support is generally given at local churches, where the funds are then sent to their associations and conferences before being forwarded to the national offices in Cleveland. (Individual donors are encouraged to give through their local churches for Our Church’s Wider Mission Basic Support)
