Our Building

Learn more about our historic church building and grounds.

St. John’s has been a vital part of downtown Lansdale for nearly 150 years. The cornerstone for the original building was laid in 1876. Our current building was built over the course of many years, from 1925 to 1952, but has been updated several times since then to provide modern and accessible facilities.

The stained glass windows in St. John’s sanctuary were commissioned from P.J. Reeves and Company in Philadelphia. All of the windows are antique glass and have been “painted with the paint so burnt into the glass to insure absolute permanency.”  These windows were designed and installed in the early 1950’s. The sanctuary opened with our first service held there on December 24, 1952.  The design selection was done by our then-pastor, Rev. Dr. Harold E. Ditzler. Information on the story of each window is available in the in the Narthex.

St. John’s Meditation Garden & Labyrinth is located next to the parking lot just west of our sanctuary along Rt. 63, Main Street. Our members, friends, and the Lansdale community are welcome to use our garden as a place to pray, meditate, reflect, and find God in the beauty of the outdoors near our sanctuary. There is a lighted, accessible path leading from the St. John’s front courtyard/elevator entrance of the church building across the front lawn and parking lot to the Meditation Garden. This project was long envisioned by our late Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. Sue Bertolette, and after many years and demolition of some old structures, our labyrinth and meditation garden were finally built in the fall of 2014 and dedicated on May 17, 2015.

St. John’s building is also home to our good friends at Lansdale Montessori School.
